I do not want to have to go to the lab to check the door posting for the classes scheduled there. Is there an easier way to check the availability of a lab?

Yes. There is now a schedule available on-line to view the classes scheduled in each lab. Click here to view those schedules. The schedules are kept up to date so you may view the most recent changes.

I have software I want to use. Can I install it on the computers in the computer lab?

No. Installing software is prohibited under the Acceptable Use Policy. Installing unauthorized software could potentially breach software licensing and/or compromise the functionality of currently installed software. If your professor has provided you software you need for instruction, please refer back to your professor to contact the Lab Manager and follow lab software installation procedure.

I have some software that I would like to install on the Instructor computer? Is this permissible?

Software should never be installed on any machine without prior authorization. Installing software could cause corruption to the currently installed software and make the machine non-functional for other users. Most software requires installation using the Administrator’s account and you do not have access to use that account. Please refer to the Software Installation Policy for Computer Facilities for the procedure on special requests.

I need to scan and print in color. Is there a lab with a color printer and scanner?

Currently, there is not a scanner available in the labs. Some departments will allow student to use their scanner. Please ask the department that you belong to for more information. A color printer is available in the 1220 lab. Follow the directions posted for printing and pricing.

For additional information, check out Printing from the main AIS site menu.

What are the computer lab policies and hours?

Regular hours vary per day. In the Labs/Facilities menu, click on a lab Hours, Lab Closures, Lab Policies or Lab Reservations to see the available hours. Note that hours change during holidays, end of the quarter and quarter breaks. Check for updates during these times.

What are the computer specifications and how many workstations are available per lab?

These labs provide Internet access, as well as general computing applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, Powerpoint, SAS, SPSS, STATA and Dreamweaver. Intranet services are also available in many of the 12th floor classrooms as well as the first floor student lounge both wirelessly and via Ethernet port.

Each of the computers in the labs is equipped with Zip 250 drives as well as CD-Rom drives. All computers also have USB Key Access.  Please see our Lab Policy for general guidelines for use of the computers in these labs.

What is the procedure to have software or hardware installed in a lab?

Generally, software requests are required to be submitted one quarter in advance. This allows time for testing for compatibility and keeps the lab image uncompromised during the quarter while class is in session. Re-imaging only happens during major breaks such as Christmas or the last two weeks of summer. Temporary or special preview requests for Software or special hardware installation follow separate procedure. Please review the Software Installation Policy for Computer Facilities for complete details.

What software is available in each lab?

The labs have the following current version of:

Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access)

STATA

Dreamweaver

FoodWorks

SAS

ARCGIS

R

SPSS

Epiinfo

SaTScan

WinBUGS

When there is a problem with the equipment, I never know who to call. How do I know who handles what problem in the lab or classroom?

In room 1225 there is a student help desk worker available during all lab hours.  For any classroom or lab question, please go to see them first. If they are unable to help you, then they will contact the appropriate person. If, for some reason, there isn’t anyone to help you in the lab, please be patient as the help desk worker should return shortly.

If you are having a problem in a classroom and a help desk worker is unavailable, please contact Admissions at 988-5388 as they are in charge of the classrooms and can find the appropriate person to help.

How do I report a computer or printer problem in a lab?

Tell the help desk worker on duty or if not available, contact the Lab Manager.

I am a faculty member. How do I reserve a computer lab?

You can request to reserve a computer lab by first checking the availability of the lab on-line. Then you can contact the Lab Manager via e-mail. This is the best way to make a request because it documents the request and can be replied to instantly via e-mail for confirmation.

What labs allow me to plug in my laptop?

There two laptop-ready areas in Tidewater 1214. You can also plug in laptops in rooms 1201, 1204, and 1210 provided that there aren’t any classes in those rooms. Wireless is also available on most floors in the building.

Please be aware that you must have the latest antivirus software that is updated and your windows system must be patched. If your computer is found not to be patched and updated, it will be automatically disconnected from the network.

What should I do if I forgot my Tulane network/e-mail password?

If you forgot your e-mail password and are a student, faculty or staff, please contact: 862-8888.

If you are faculty or staff and have forgotten your windows log-on password, please contact 988-1400.

Your identity will be confirmed and your password reset.

Please note: The help desk is staffed during regular working hours.
